SPICERS PAPER

Within the subject for Pre-Press and Print Production at the University of Technology Sydney, we were required to design a promotional pack for an Australian paper stockist, Spicers Paper, that featured a set number of paper stocks, embellishments and print ready files.

This project was based on the subject of endangered species. Due to the changes in land use, globalization, unsustainable use of natural resources, climate change and pollution, global biodiversity is being lost much faster than natural extinction. My purpose is to inform that the animals need to be protected and let them have a green living environment. Animals needs peace and they should not be suffering.

Please visit the Spicers Paper Website for further information on the organisation.

UNPACKAGING

Through my research processes, I have discovered intriguing insights which I aspire to explore and play with, through my design. The most important insight of my findings is the statement, “sustainable packaging is no packaging”. Moving away from over packaged contemporary products, to using less or no materials for packaging and encourage effective sustainable packaging.

This project was aimed to create a design response focusing on the insights that I have found in my research. I have tried to communicate the understandings of the importance of wrapping and packaging but also the helping to create a sustainable environment.

I created a set of five DIY booklet which consists of three categories: Create your own sustainable shopping bag, create your own sustainable food package, and how to reuse everyday waste (ie. cereal box, newspaper). My intentions for creating these booklets were to increase the awareness of waste disposable issues in the world and how we can help by recycling and reusing materials that are around us. To remind the community to use their own shopping bags so we can help resolve the issue as a community.

ACADD

During my third year at the University of Technology Sydney, I had an opportunity to work with the Australian Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc. along with my classmates: Jeff Ginsburg, Isabelle Howarth, and Stacey Lewis.

The Australian Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (ACADD) is a non-profit organisation founded by a group of recovering alcoholics and drug addicts and their families. Its focus is promoting the understanding that alcohol and drug addiction are treatable diseases.

Our task for this project was to engage Alcoholism and Drug Dependent suffers, including friends or family further affected by the disease, and to re-affirm hope, community, and the need for change in all aspects of their lives.

Alcohol and Drug campaigns are predominately negative and rely upon ‘scare tactics’ to influence change. ACADD understands Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and are changing the way we think about and approach its solution.

We rebranded ACADD with a new identity using the heart element from the existing logo, starter kit brochures that includes three brochures and a poster describing the impact of alcoholism and addiction on the family. Our goal was to turn the tables on conventional ‘help’ brochures and shed a positive light on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as well as to reiterate ACADD as an authoritative and approachable organisation. Therefore, we used the 'pink elephant' as our theme throughout our project - a term used by alcoholics to describe addiction as something that is there but never acknowledged.

We had a lot of challenges during our project such as communicating Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in a positive manner, whilst still identifying with the concerns and experiences of viewers. Creating a brochure that is full of knowledge and information without developing a content heavy brochure and identifying with an extremely wide target audience at the same time as making each brochure personal to viewers.

Please visit the ACADD website for further information about the organisation.

DAS GUTE BACKEREI

During my final year at the University of Technology Sydney, I proposed to redesign the identity of a bakery named 'Das Gute Backerei'. Das Gute Bakery was first established in Osaka, Japan in 1998. Das Gute are dedicated to innovation, quality and using natural ingredients in delivering fresh bread and cakes for customers in commercial and residential areas.

As visual communication plays a crucial role in creating identity, I aimed to redesign the identity of Das Gute Bakery by introducing sustainability. Currently, bread packaging in Das Gute uses excessive plastic bags everyday. Through my research findings, approximately 6.9 billion plastic bags are used every year in Australia. It is a very useful, light weight, cheap, functional and resistant bag, however, it is manufactured from non-renewable resources and is prominent in the litter stream. Thus, I directed my focus on the waste we face everyday from food packaging, in particular, bread and cake packaging: how we can reduce waste and reuse them.

Growing up in a family bakery business, I am aware about the bakery environment. It was a very valuable personal experience as a graphic designer, to design a bakery identity and to create awareness in pursuing a cleaner environment.

FREEBIRD

A branding identity for a proposed design studio. The vision for the studio was to have simplicity and elegance in its style of work. The feathers of the birds were used as a metaphor for the existence of a bird. A design studio that would make influential and memorable design. The free flowing feathers placed around the stationary to emphasise on the peacefulness and characteristics of my design.

JOHNNY BENNETT WEBSITE

Johnny Bennett is one of those rare, but highly sought after artists - the breed of singer/songwriter who has lifetime experience and wisdom that literally gushes into the meaning and sentiment of every song he writes. I was very grateful to be able to work on Johnny Bennett's website. I loved his images, his style, it was a challenging and enjoyable task whilst working at Blue Pie Productions. Johnny Bennett's website was one of my favourite website I designed.

I wanted to use the black and white theme for his website to have a classy look. I incorporated symbols for the navigations for viewers engagement for a minimalist look.

KHYLUNE WEBSITE

Khylune is a rare breed in today’s music scene. Born in the cultural hub of Malaysia, Khylune had his first encounter with music at an early age when he sang gospels in his local churches. From there he never looked back, something awakened inside of him and his desire to answer his calling as a professional musician became all too strong for him to deny. He spent the first six years of his singing career traveling extensively across South East Asia performing live shows.
